Do Sunderland need him?
Jordan Pickford’s departure to Everton means that 10 players have already fled Wearside in the aftermath of Sunderland’s relegation, including loan winger Adnan Januzaj. McGeady, who scored eight goals and made another nine from the latter’s position for Preston last season, could therefore be a useful addition.
What complications could they face?
McGeady is said to earn £50,000 a week at Everton [Daily Record], which cash-strapped Sunderland could struggle to match. With his contract up at the end of next season, it is likely the Toffees will favour a permanent transfer rather than sanction another subsidised loan deal, the latter of which would most likely suit the Mackems.

The uncertainty over Sunderland’s next manager, not to mention the ownership of the club, could be a turn off for the 88-cap Irishman.
How could they swing a deal in their favour?
A quick resolution regarding a potential takeover would certainly help Sunderland’s cause, although these things tend to drag on. The appointment of Simon Grayson, who coaxed out the best of McGeady at Preston and is the current bookies favourite to take charge at the Stadium of Light, would also increase the Mackems’ appeal.
