Middlesbrough supporters have taken to Twitter to comment on the latest reports suggesting they are set to sign midfielder John Obi Mikel on a free transfer.

According to a report in the Gazette, Boro are hopeful of concluding a deal for Mikel in the next 24 hours after the player agreed terms with the club and completed the first phase of a medical.

Boro are hoping to strengthen their squad this month as they push for promotion to the Premier League. The Teesside club are currently fifth in the Championship, six points adrift of the automatic promotion places.

But supporters feel the club need more creativity and goals in their side, not another central midfielder. Responding to the speculation on Twitter, fans are divided over the prospect of Mikel joining.

Should Mikel complete his switch to the Riverside Stadium, Boro will have as many as seven central midfielders on their books, including summer signings Paddy McNair and George Saville.

Mikel has plenty of experience having featured at World Cups for Nigeria and for Premier League side Chelsea, winning several trophies with the Blues including the Champions League in 2012.

Manager Tony Pulis has made no secret of his desire to strengthen Boro’s squad this month, but supporters may feel the club should be investing in attacking players instead, having only scored 31 league goals this term.
