Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has told the club’s official website that is was ‘obvious’ that Tanguy Ndombele needed to come off against Leicester City.
Ndombele was hooked at half-time in Tottenham’s defeat to Leicester, after the Frenchman failed to make much of an impact in the opening period.
Ndombele was given attacking licence in an advanced midfield role, but he failed to link up Spurs’s attack and defence as required.
Gareth Bale was the man who was sent on to replace him at half-time.
And Mourinho said: “The decision to take Tanguy at half-time was an obvious decision, but we needed Gio there to give dynamic to the game, and we lost him.
“I decided to go with Winks because he’s not an attacking midfield player, but he is someone who can move the ball better than we were doing and the team improved.”

Tottenham may have improved after Winks’s eventual introduction, but they were unable to get back into the contest.
Spurs were disappointingly poor, as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat, which has seen them fall out of the top four in the Premier League table.
Tottenham were being talked up as title contenders by many recently, but they have now taken just one point from their last nine, and have slipped a long way behind league leaders Liverpool.
