Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Newcastle and their interest in Christian Pulisic this summer.

The Magpies were strongly linked with a move for Pulisic throughout the last transfer window, with some even claiming that a deal was discussed and negotiated at Stamford Bridge while Chelsea were hosting Tottenham.

However, as we all know, that deal never came to fruition, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying, according to Romano, Newcastle were utterly obsessed with the idea of getting Pulisic this summer, but they were only keen on a loan deal at this point.

Newcastle wanted Pulisic

Romano shared what he knows about the American and the Magpies.

“Strong interest from Newcastle. Newcastle were obsessed with Christian,” Romano said.

“They wanted him. But they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal. They wanted him on loan, maybe with a buy option, not mandatory. And this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”

Why didn’t they get him?

If Newcastle were truly obsessed with Pulisic then we have to question why they didn’t buy him outright.

Yes, a loan deal has less risk attached to it, but Newcastle are the richest football club on the planet, surely they could’ve afforded to splash out and sign the winger.

Of course, FFP issues are a factor here, but let’s be real, after years of underspending with Mike Ashley, Newcastle aren’t close to the bone with FFP and they probably had room in the budget to make this signing happen.

Romano is making a big claim when stating that Newcastle were obsessed with Pulisic, and we can’t help but feel that if they were truly that into the player they’d have gone out and signed him by any means necessary.
