‘Obsessed’: Fabrizio Romano comments on Leeds pursuit of Brenden Aaronson

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Leeds United are “obsessed” with RedBull Salzburg midfielder Brendan Aaronson – and that “anything can happen”. However, Romano reports that a deal looks unlikely.

Aaronson, 21, has emerged as a strong target for the Whites over the last few days, as Leeds look to bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s midfield options. USA star Aaronson is seen as the perfect signings that fits the Leeds mould.

Bids of £15million and £20million have been made, the latter of which is yet to receive a response. His form is catching the eye after shining in 51 games in just 12 months – having a hand in 22 goals from midfield for Salzburg.

Asked about a possible move to Leeds for Aaronson on CBS podcast Que Golazo, Romano stated that Leeds are desperate to sign him this month and that there is a chance. However, Salzburg are looking likely to keep him.

Yes, it’s true. It’s true Salzburg rejected this proposal from Leeds,” Romano said. “They’re obsessed with him. They feel that he would be perfect. Salzburg want to keep him until the end of the season.

“The player would be open to this move but from the club’s side. We will see what happens in the coming days. At the end of the transfer window, anything can happen. But at the moment, it’s not an easy one for Leeds.”

Romano on Aaronson: Can Leeds tempt Salzburg before deadline?

It is looking increasingly unlikely. Even if the Whites tabled a third bid north of £25million, Salzburg find themselves in their first ever Champions League knockout tie. It is a huge moment in the club’s history.

Yes, Salzburg are traditionally a selling club. But with such an important landmark on the horizon and are not under any financial pressure to sell, they will want to give themselves the best chance of upsetting Bayern.

As Romano says, time will tell and Salzburg could have a change of heart. But what is clear, is that if Leeds do not get him this month, they will retain that interest when the summer window comes around.
