West Ham United have managed to turn their season around in recent months.

Hammers midfielder Pedro Obiang spoke to the club’s official website, and explained why Manuel Lanzini needs to start proving on a regular basis that he is the club’s top player.

The Argentine has been magnificent for West Ham recently, especially after Dimitri Payet’s departure, and has been behind everything good that Slaven Bilic’s men have done over the past couple of months.

The Hammers sealed the permanent signing of the 24-year-old in the summer, but his progression was hindered after the club brought him back too soon after he sustained a knee injury earlier on in the campaign.

He has gone on to score five goals and chip in with two assists in 23 Premier League outings, and will be looking to improve upon his productivity during the remainder of his side’s campaign.

And Obiang highlighted Lanzini’s importance to the Hammers side from a creative aspect, when speaking to WHUFC.com:

“Manu is our number ten and he needs to demonstrate every time that he is now our top player, so we need to use him every time we have the ball, because he has confidence and he tries to create chances.”

With seven points separating Bilic’s men and eighth placed West Bromwich Albion, West Ham will need to string together a sustained run of victories if they are to force themselves into contention for a place inside the Europa League spots.

And in order to do that, Lanzini will have to maintain his performance levels, whilst improving upon his goals and assist tallies, as he looks to fill the void left behind by Dimitri Payet.
