Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that Nuno Tavares wants to join Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has also reported that Benfica are looking for €17 million (£14.58 million) as transfer fee for the 21-year-old left-back.

The Gunners are reportedly in contact with the agents of the Portuguese youngster.

Tavares wants to join Arsenal despite having interest from Napoli and Lazio, according to Romano, who has added that personal terms between the left-back and the Gunners will not be an issue.

Would Nuno Tavares make Arsenal better?

Kieran Tierney is the first-choice left-back at Arsenal and recently signed a new deal with the Gunners.

The 24-year-old Scotland international will be the first choice in manager Arteta’s team.

That is not going to change anytime soon.

However, Arsenal do need a new left-back as cover.

Tavares does appear to be a decent prospect.

The youngster will not cost a lot of money and is reportedly open to a move to Arsenal.

The Portugal Under-21 international will know that he is going to play second fiddle to Tierney, but he still seems eager to make the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

The 26-year-old made seven starts and seven substitute appearances in the Portuguese league last season.

Tavares also made three starts and two substitute appearances in the Europa League for Benfica in 2020-21.
