Phil Ofosu-Ayeh could have blossomed with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League if it wasn’t for the relentless injury problems which wrecked his Molineux career, his agent tells the Birmingham Mail.
When it comes to a 29-year-old Ghana international, it is hard not to wonder what might have been.
Ofosu-Ayeh arrived at Wolves in 2017 after making a name for himself in Germany with the likes of Eintracht Braunschweig and Duisberg.
But flash forward to August 2020 and the athletic right-back was on his way out of Wolverhampton, released in rather unceremonious fashion having failed to make a single first-team appearance in three years in the Black Country.
Ofosu-Ayeh has those pesky injury problems to blame for that, with a tendonitis issue ensuring that he missed seven months immediately after moving to England.
“If you look at his career he’s maybe had one full season without injury. If he didn’t have these injuries I believe that he would be in the Premier League today,” Ofosu-Ayeh’s agent, Jwtiar Khalid Rahman, explains.
“He had water in his knees, that’s why it was difficult at the start. When he was fit after one week he got a new injury and he couldn’t play for eight months.
“When he was back, Wolves had already been promoted to the Premier League two or three games before. Nuno didn’t want to risk something, he just wanted to play with the first XI.”
The exceptional form of Matt Doherty certainly didn’t help either, with the Irishman playing pretty much week-in-week-out in Old Gold before moving to Tottenham Hotspur over the summer.
Ofosu-Ayeh, less than a year away from his 30th birthday, now finds himself without a club and his future in football uncertain.
