Tim Sherwood has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur fans had to be convinced by Harry Kane and now those in the stands ‘love him’

The former Spurs boss added that it was ‘very difficult’ for Kane during the early stages of his Spurs career because of a certain Roberto Soldado.

When Sherwood was in the Spurs dugout, he had big-money signing Soldado at the club, but he was struggling to produce the goods.

That’s when the title-winning midfielder used his past knowledge of the Spurs academy to give a fresh-faced Kane a chance to shine.

From that game against Sunderland to that free-kick goal under Mauricio Pochettino against Aston Villa, they were two game-changing moments for the now record-breaking striker.

But Sherwood thinks it all wasn’t plain sailing because Kane, who is now regarded as one of the best in the world, had to convince fans that he could make it, as he told Premier League Productions (01/10/22 at 12:05 pm).

“It was very difficult for Kane because Soldado was there and there was a lot of pressure,” said Sherwood. “I remember the fans, even when Harry was starting the games, after an hour if he hadn’t scored, they were singing for Soldado to come onto the pitch and now they sing ‘he’s one of our own’.

“But it takes a lot of work for them to be able to convince the fans, as a local boy. Now they love him. But at the time, they didn’t.

“Mentally, he’s very, very strong and he can cope. His desire and his determination to be better every single day and still now. It’s why where he is.”

KANE IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST

A certain Erling Haaland at Manchester City might be making a mockery of proceedings and goalscoring statistics, but that shouldn’t take away from what the rest are doing.

For years now, Kane has scored every type of goal for fun, whether it’s in the Premier League or during Tottenham’s stints in the Champions League.

Many talk about the England captain winning that first trophy as a player, well, if Spurs have any chance, then they need the Kane and Antonio Conte partnership to work long-term.

If that happens for the next two or three years, then there is no reason why the club’s and Kane’s trophy wait won’t end.
