Barnsley are searching for a new manager following the news that Paul Heckingbottom has moved to Leeds United to succeed Thomas Christiansen.
Heckingbottom spent two years as Tykes boss, getting them promoted from League One in 2015/16 as playoff winners in the same year they lifted the EFL Trophy.
Thomas Christiansen leaves the field during the Sky Bet Championship match between Ipswich Town and Leeds United.
However, surely the standout candidate to take charge at Oakwell is someone who was linked with the Leeds job himself – Simon Grayson?
The Daily Mail claimed that Grayson wanted a return to Elland Road, where he managed for a little under four years between 2008 and 2012 and secured promotion from League One.

Clearly the Whites have decided to take a different approach, but having also taken Huddersfield Town and Preston North end out of the third tier of English football and achieved successive 11th place finishes with the latter in the Championship against the odds, the 48-year-old is a proven coach at this level.
Grayson’s last job at Sunderland may have ended with him being sacked with the Black Cats in the relegation zone, but then little to no improvement since his departure suggests that problems at the Stadium of Light stretch far beyond the dugout.
