HITC Sport understands that the former Bolton and Newcastle ace is to get another crack at management after a short spell with Leyton Orient.
Notts County are in talks with Kevin Nolan about becoming their new manager, HITC Sport understands.
The 34-year-old has had a brief spell in management when he took charge of League Two Leyton Orient last season, before departing.
But now he is in line to replace John Sheridan, who was sacked at the start of this month.

County, currently just a point above the drop-zone in League Two, have interviewed a number of candidates with Mark Robins and David Flitcroft amongst those who are believed to have impressed new owner Alan Hardy.
However, sources close to the situation have told HITC Sports that Nolan is close to agreeing a deal to take charge at Meadow Lane.
Nolan, who played over 600 games during a distinguished player career with Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham, has confirmed his desire to get back into football.
He managed just 15 games at Meadow Lane, seven of which were wins with six losses. His former Newcastle teammate Alan Smith is currently caretaker at the Magpies.
