Nottingham Forest have announced via their official website that youth academy graduate Jordan Smith has pledged his future to the club by signing a three-year deal, tying him down with the club until 2020.

The 22-year-old, who has been with Forest since he was seven years old, has impressed many after filling in for the injured Stephen Henderson in the first team, and has made experienced stopper Vladimir Stojkovic second choice.

Smith has been a mainstay in the team for the last eight fixtures, and kept his first clean sheet for the club in only his third appearance – and second start – for the club, in a 0-0 Championship draw with Wigan Athletic.

Speaking to the club’s website after the news was broken, Smith claimed that he it was a tremendous honour to sign a new deal with a club that has been a huge part of his life for as long as he can remember.

“I am massively proud,” Smith said, to the club’s website. “It is easy to say it is a great honour to pledge your future to this club, but it really is. I have been here since I was a seven-year-old boy and the longest contract I have had before was my scholarship and I have had to prove myself year-on-year.

“I have been given my shot in the first team and I have taken it with both hands and been rewarded. At the start of this season there were three goalkeepers ahead of me and in the last couple of years I had to go out on loan to find football as that is where I am happiest, playing football.”

Forest are currently in a Championship relegation dogfight at present, and are hovering just two points above the drop zone with seven games left to play.

The Reds can make a big leap towards safety with a victory in their next fixture, away at fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers, which takes place on Tuesday evening.
