Nottingham Forest’s Barrie McKay explains Rangers departure

Pedro Caixinha’s Glasgow Rangers sold Barrie McKay to Nottingham Forest in the summer transfer window.

Nottingham Forest winger Barrie McKay has told BBC Sport that he was not treated like a human being by Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha.

McKay left Scottish Premiership club Rangers for Forest in the Championship in England earlier in the summer transfer window.

According to STV, the Reds had to pay the Gers a transfer fee of £500,000 in order to secure the services of the 22-year-old winger.

The Scotland international was rated quite highly at Rangers and much was expected of him when Mark Warburton was in charge at Ibrox.

However, the youngster, who will get to work with Warburton again at Forest, failed to impress new manager Pedro Caixinha.

As reported by BBC Sport, the talented and promising young winger started just three of Rangers’ final eight fixtures of the 2016-17 campaign.

McKay has revealed that Caixinha did not treat him like a human being, and that it was not hard for him to make the switch from Rangers to Forest.

“There was a change of manager and his opinion was different,” McKay told BBC Sport. “I wasn’t being treated the way any human being should be treated, but that’s football and I had to move on.”

When asked if it had been a difficult decision to leave his first club, the youngster said: “Not really at the time, with the way things went with the manager and the way I was being treated and stuff.

“It made the decision easy for when the gaffer got on the phone and he was obviously a big factor in me coming here and working with him again.

“When he came into Rangers, it was a big stage of my development and he helped me improve as a player. The way things happened up there is more disappointing.

“I spoke to my family, spoke to my girlfriend, spoke to my agent and I think it was just the right time. I guess that’s football, but I’m a big boy and will get on with it.”
