Forest are reportedly after a defender that can play on both sides.

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka looks on at Pride Park Stadium on December 17, 2018 in Derby, England.

Nottingham Forest reportedly want to sign a defender that can play on eitherside of a back four, and Leeds United possess the perfect player for Aitor Karanka’s side.

The Nottingham Post claim Karanka wants a versatile full-back in the January transfer window, as well as a powerful, speedy winger ahead of next month.

Forest are currently in the hunt for promotion, sitting in seventh place but only one point behind the top six in the Championship table. They need additions in January, though, if they are to bulldozer their way into the reckoning.

It should point them in the direction of a direct promotion rival, in Leeds United, who boast a squad that currently sees them top the Championship table.

On the injury list is Gaetano Berardi, who is expected to return in January. With Luke Ayling first choice on the right side of defence and Barry Douglas on the left, the one-time Swiss international is likely to be warming the bench when he returns.

Forest should offer the former Sampdoria star the chance to gain regular first-team football at the City Ground, as he matches the criteria perfectly ahead of the January window.

Berardi is renowned for his tough-tackling, heart-on-the-sleeve performances that have seen the Elland Road crowd endear themselves towards the 30-year-old.

But as he has got older, Berardi has added a maturity and class towards his performances. He is much more comfortable on the ball than the raw defender that joined Leeds in the summer of 2014.

With 115 Championship appearances under his belt, Berardi is the perfect option for Forest and Karanka would certainly bolster his side with the addition of the Leeds favourite.
