Mansfield Town manager John Dempster has conceded that Nottingham Forest ace Tyler Walker is unlikely to return to the One Call Stadium next season for a second loan stint (Mansfield Chad).

The Stags boss added that Reds boss Martin O’Neill has asked the 22-year-old to return for pre-season, which suggests the potential of becoming established within the first team, but also believed that there could potentially be interest from leagues higher up than where Mansfield currently are.

Walker’s Mansfield stint was a resounding success as he netted 22 goals in 44 regular-season League Two appearances, with an additional four goals in the cup competitions taking his overall tally to 26 goals plus four assists, according to Transfermarkt.

With Forest gearing up for another shot at promotion to the Premier League in 2019-20, the son of Reds legend Des Walker – who is contracted to the City Ground club until 2021 – will be hoping to finally break into the first team and do all he can to help the club achieve this objective.

“I am still in communication with Tyler,” Dempster is quoted by the Mansfield Chad as saying. “But realistically I’m not sure whether coming back to Mansfield would happen. We now have other irons in the fire.

“The manager at Nottingham Forest has asked him to go back and do pre-season training with them, so Tyler will be hoping to be part of their plans. Also, because of his outstanding performances and his goal tally for us, there will possibly be interest from higher divisions too.”

The Nottinghamshire side narrowly missed out on promotion to League One last time out, being beaten by Newport County in the playoff semi-finals, with Tranmere Rovers overcoming the Exiles at Wembley to join Lincoln City, Bury and MK Dons in the third tier.
