The Independent claim on their deadline-day blog (31/01, 2.47PM) that Nottingham Forest will pay a bargain fee of £1.86million to sign Atletico Madrid defender Felipe today – with the player already spotted arriving at the City Ground.

Veteran defender Felipe, 33, is out of contract in the summer. After just four outings under Diego Simeone this season, he has chosen to leave six months prior to his deal ending. Forest have gambled on him in their fight against the drop.

He is one of a number of expected incomings and outgoings at Forest today. Jonjo Shelvey is also expected to agree a move to Steve Cooper’s side, from Newcastle – after Chris Wood. Felipe brings him a wealth of experience at Forest.

Two caps for Brazil, he has played 142 times for Porto, and 113 games under Simeone at Atleti since joining in 2019. The report from the Independent states that Felipe is close to sealing a move to Forest – for a cut-price fee of £1.86m.

Felipe is a solid signing for Forest. You look at Cooper’s side and if you can pinpoint an area in which Forest need to improve, it is at centre-back. Steve Cook is not a Premier League player – and he is expected to go on loan today.

Championship clubs are keen. Felipe comes in and immediately improves Cooper’s options in defence. His know how, especially having played under one of the best pragmatic managers in the world in Simeone, will only aid Forest.

To get him for less than £2million is excellent work at Forest. He is an incoming, as is Shelvey, while a lot of others will be leaving the City Ground in the coming hours as Forest look to trim their bloated squad after nearly 30 signings.
