Greg Cunningham is a man in demand this summer. According to HITC sources, Championship duo Middlesbrough and Cardiff City are hoping to lure him away from Preston North End before the new season.
The former Manchester City youngster has two years remaining on his contract at Deepdale, meaning he wouldn’t come cheap. However, the fact his performances have gone under the radar since moving from Bristol City two years ago do the Republic of Ireland left-back a disservice.
Cunningham has been one of the most consistently reliable fullbacks in the Championship over the last two years and would surely be an astute replacement if recently relegated Middlesbrough were unable to hang onto George Friend this summer.
However, if there’s one group of fans who do not need to be convinced about Cunningham’s understated qualities, its Nottingham Forests.
Initially arriving at the City Ground on a two-month loan in October 2011 to cover a defensive injury crisis, Forest did not wait around tying the then-City starlet down to a deal until the end of the campaign.
With just two defeats in their final ten games of the season, Forest narrowly avoided relegation to League One in 2011/12 and Cunningham’s stand-out performances on the left of defence played a pivotal role.
And, five years on, the 26-year-old would surely be welcomed back at Forest with open arms.
The club are understood to be on the market for reinforcements at left-back following the release of Dani Pinillos. And The Times claims that QPR’s Jake Bidwell is a potential target.
