The former Everton man and current Greece international has had an indifferent first season with Forest.
Nottingham Forest’s Apostolos Vellios scores their second goal
While transfer business at Nottingham Forest seems very quiet at this moment in time, one player that the Reds should look to keep hold of is Greece international striker Apostolos Vellios, who had an interesting debut season to say the least.
The 25-year-old scored six goals in 31 appearances for the Reds in his first season, though was used as a substitute 18 times and appeared to find himself in Gary Brazil’s bad books, with Brazil fielding Vellios for a grand total of 14 minutes in his 11 games in caretaker charge.

Under Mark Warburton, Vellios was brought back into the fold – albeit as a sub – and featured in four of Warburton’s nine matches in charge at the tail-end of the season, which ultimately saw Forest survive in the Championship on goal difference.
However, under Philippe Montanier, Vellios frequently looked like a very promising player – someone who was big, strong on the ball and in the air, useful in possession, fairly quick on the turn, and pretty decent in front of goal as well. In fact, Vellios’ amazing overhead kick goal against Rotherham United was voted as the club’s goal of the season.

There is absolutely no reason why Warburton can’t get that sort of form out of Vellios again – who it must be said, behaved impeccably during Brazil’s shocking tenure, when other players would’ve spat their dummy out – and Forest fans will be hoping that’s the case, as most have grown to quite like the former Everton man.
With Forest’s budget fairly limited due to Financial Fair Play regulations and with the Reds quite well stocked up top, the only logical explanation to introduce a striker to the first-team would be if someone from that department was sold – but Warburton should persist with Vellios, at least until January.
