Newcastle United signed their current number one from Nottingham Forest and could give them the Belgian in return.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has hinted he could leave the club on loan this summer, perhaps to another English club (Het Nieuwsblad).

The Belgian cost the Magpies a reported fee of £5.5 million last summer, but soon found himself displaced by Karl Darlow, who cost almost that amount himself from Nottingham Forest.

And though 18 months have passed since Darlow left the City Ground for good (he was immediately loaned back to the Reds after his 2014 transfer) they are yet to properly replace him.

Dorus De Vries succeeded for a short while until Celtic came in for him, but neither Stephen Henderson nor Vladimir Stojkovic especially, have proved adequate successors.

It is likely, therefore, that a new ‘keeper will top Forest’s list of summer priorities, and Sels could be the perfect candidate.

Despite his less-than-convincing introduction to English football, it would perhaps be unfair to write off the 24-year-old so soon – after all, he’s still a relative baby in goalkeeping terms.

And away from the well-documented pressures of playing for Newcastle United, it would be little surprise to see Sels flourish.

Besides, even if he doesn’t, he’s still a significant upgrade on the clowns they have already.
