Nottingham Forest are offering Remo Freuler a £30,000-a-week contract to swap Serie A giants Atalanta for a fresh start in the Premier League, as reported by Calciomercato

You only have to look at the stats to see why Nottingham Forest appear to have made the 30-year-old Switzerland international one of their leading targets heading into the final stretch of the transfer window.

Freuler, last season, averaged more tackles per game (2.4) than Joe Worrall, according to WhoScored. More interceptions (1.2 per game) than Jack Colback and Ryan Yates. And, moreover, a better pass completion rate (87 per cent) than anyone who featured regularly under Steve Cooper during last term’s play-off winning campaign.

Nottingham Forest eye complete midfielder Remo Freuler

The BBC, in an article published back in 2020, questioned whether Freuler was ‘Europe’s most underrated player’? Now that is certainly up for debate. Hello, Filip Kostic.

But what cannot be disputed is that this is a midfielder who can perform almost any task asked of him on a football pitch.

Whether distributing or destroying, setting the tempo or putting out fires, Freuler does it all. Football’s very own Swiss Army Knife.

Nottingham Forest could have done with his poise and purpose during a rather underwhelming 2-0 defeat to a canny and composed Newcastle United side on opening day. The two-time European champions failed with a £9 million bid for Freuler before their trip to St James’ Park (TuttoAtalanta).

Forest are unlikely to accept defeat just yet, however. Particularly with Freuler, who has played a major role in Atalanta’s remarkable transformation from mid-table also rans to Champions League regulars under iconic head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, eyeing a fresh start after six years in Bergamo.

According to Calciomercato, Nottingham Forest are offering Freuler a contract worth around £30,000-a-week. That would presumably make him one of the best-paid players in Cooper’s squad.

Atalanta have reportedly identified Spezia captain Guilio Maggiore as Freuler’s replacement.
