Mark Warburton needs a new goalkeeper and who better than one he knows and trusts? However, Fulham’s David Button is on Reading’s radar too.
Few tears will be shed when Vladimir Stojkovic bids farewell to Nottingham Forest. Scroll through social media on a matchday last season and you would have uncovered a barrage of criticism volleyed towards a goalkeeper who has 73 caps for the Serbian national team.
You could only assume that Stojkovic performed far better on the international stage than he did during the majority of his 20 Championship games for Forest last season.
Stojkovic was far from a fans’ favourite at Forest
Therefore, its little surprise that the Nottingham Post is reporting that the one-time Wigan ‘keeper has been told he is free to find a new club alongside fellow forgotten men Lica and Damien Perquis. Brought to the club by divisive sporting director Pedro Pereira just a year ago, Stojkovic quickly lost his place in the side and was usurped by rookie youngster Jordan Smith once Mark Warburton took the reins late in the season.
However, with Smith just 22 years of age, and fellow shot-stopper Stephen Henderson suffering with injuries, Forest could do with more competition for the number one spot at the City Ground.
Magic Button
Yet, if Warburton wants a reunion with David Button, the goalkeeper who thrived under his tutelage at Brentford, he will have to move fast. According to GetWestLondon, Warburton was keen to sign the 28-year-old, who he described as ‘the best in the league’ after a super performance against Norwich in January 2015, as reported by ITV.
Button lost his place at current club Fulham to Italian Marcus Bettinelli in the final weeks of last season, meaning a departure could be on the cards. Yet, the report adds that Reading, rather than Forest, could be his destination.
Button is one of the league’s most impressive keepers on his day
Jaap Stam’s side need reinforcements after Ali Al Habsi moved to Al Hilal and Button fits the bill perfectly. HITC sources told us that Reading made a bid last week and now it appears that the deal is gathering pace.
Therefore, Forest need to move fast or face missing out.
