Nottingham Forest midfielder David Vaughan has been speaking about the club’s leaky defence so far this season.

The Welsh midfielder was speaking to the club’s official website this week when he had this to say on their defensive record:

“I think it’s been more of a mental problem in that we just haven’t been able to see games out. As soon as the opposition get a goal it seems they get another straight away so we need to improve our concentration as much as anything else.

“We’ve also struggled to find a balance between defence and attack this season. We’ve probably been over-committing when going forward and at times that has left us a bit exposed at the back which we need to correct.”

Forest have certainly struggled to keep the ball out of their own net.

Only Rotherham United have conceded more goals than Forest this season. The Reds have conceded 22 goals, more than the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City below them in the league table.

The defensive record is certainly a reason for concern among the Forest fans and the players – as they are currently in freefall in the Championship.

Luckily they have not had much trouble going in the other direction.

Forest have scored 19 goals in the league this season, the joint fourth-highest amount with Bristol City. If they did not have a potent threat going forward, then they would be in a far worse position at this stage of the season.

In recent weeks however, with Britt Assombalonga out injured, Forest have struggled to score with the same regularity and that has seen them slip down the league table.

They will hope to change that around with a good result against Birmingham City tonight.
