Nottingham Forest suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss to rivals Burton Albion on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup at the Pirelli Stadium – and Forest fans have hammered summer signing Michael Hefele.

Aitor Karanka decided to overhaul his squad and make 10 changes to the side that drew with Leeds United on Saturday evening in the Championship, with only Matty Cash retaining his place.

It backfired on the Spanish boss, with Burton dominating and even missing a penalty in the first half through striker Liam Boyce, who blazed over Luke Steele’s goal.

Burton opened the scoring through a Saidy Janko own goal, before Scott Fraser doubled their advantage. Substitute Lewis Grabban got one back, before Jake Hesketh scored Burton’s third. Arvin Appiah scored late on, but to no avail.

The defeat, in which Hefele partnered Michael Dawson at centre-back, sees Burton progress into the last eight of the competition while Forest will have to wait until the FA Cup comes around to go on another run.

Hefele, 28, joined Forest from Huddersfield in the summer, but has been in and out of the side as Karanka struggles to identify his best centre-back pairing. Danny Fox and Tobias Figuerido were used on Saturday.

But his display against Burton will have done him no favours of working his way back into the starting eleven, with the majority of Forest fans fuming with his performance.
