Several Nottingham Forest fans have taken to Twitter to laud Joao Carvalho’s performance during Martin O’Neill’s side’s stunning 3-0 win against Middlesbrough.

Carvalho was handed a rare start after becoming more of a peripheral figure since O’Neill returned to the City Ground. In fact, he was named in the starting lineup for only the second time under the current boss.

And the frustration from the supporters towards O’Neill appears to have increased after the manager named Carvalho in the starting lineup for Monday’s clash with Tony Pulis’ side, as the 22-year-old was virtually unplayable.

The attacking midfielder was outstanding, contributing an assist and causing the play-off chasers all sorts of problems as Forest stormed to an emphatic win.

The anger has been directed at O’Neill as the win has come too late for Forest to make the top six this season. They now find themselves seven points back with two games remaining.

Plenty of supporters are adamant that Forest may still have had a chance to make the play-offs had Carvalho been given a more prominent role since O’Neill took charge. And after his performance against Middlesbrough, it is incredibly difficult to argue against that notion.
