Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner has previously enjoyed two loan spells with Nottingham Forest.
Nottingham Forest are close to signing a “forward thinking” midfielder, in addition to the imminent arrivals of Andreas Bouchalakis and Tendayi Darikwa, manager Mark Warburton has confirmed via the Nottingham Post.
The same publication has credited Forest with interest in Jackson Irvine, Gary Gardner and Kevin MacDonald of Burton Albion, Aston Villa and Fulham respectively, with The Mirror since reporting that the Reds are trying to sign Gardner for a third time.

Gardner has had two separate loan spells at the City Ground, and is said to be wanted on a permanent basis on this occasion.
According to The Mirror, the Aston Villa academy product is open to a fresh start elsewhere, after the Villans added four players – Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane, Birkir Bjarnasson and Glenn Whelan – in his position this calendar year.
But after a quick glance on social media, it would appear that Forest fans aren’t so keen on the idea, and would prefer either Irvine or MacDonald instead.
