Mark Warburton was dismissed as Nottingham Forest manager on Sunday amid faltering Championship form.
Mark Warburton became the ninth permanent Nottingham Forest manager to be sacked in the last six years on Sunday when he was dismissed from his post.
Forest’s new ownership decided to wield the axe on the 55-year-old following the home defeat to Sunderland, which was a third defeat in four Championship matches.
The Tricky Trees have now gone through Steve McClaren, Steve Cotterill, Sean O’Driscoll, Alex McLeish, Billy Davies, Stuart Pearce, Dougie Freedman, Philippe Montanier and Warburton since 2011.
Although having crowd favourites returning as manager has spelt disaster in the past, Forest fans are pretty clear about their preference for two ex-players to take on the poisoned chalice.
According to The Express, former Middlesbrough managers Aitor Karanka and Garry Monk are the early frontrunners for the vacancy at Forest, who sit 14th in the Championship table.
While they both boast Championship experience, Martin O’Neill would have the support of the City Ground having won two European Cups and a league title in a decade there as a player.
O’Neill’s assistant for the Republic of Ireland – Roy Keane – is another famous Forest alumnus and the management team may be looking for a new challenge after failing to qualify for the World Cup.
