Nottingham Forest fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to discuss the possibility of signing Joey Barton.

Barton is on the books of Scottish giants Rangers at the moment and has a contract with the Gers until June 2018, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

The former Newcastle United midfielder joined Mark Warburton’s side in the summer transfer window after leaving Burnley at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Englishman arrived at Ibrox with a strong reputation, but the 34-year-old has failed to make a huge impact so far.

Barton has not played well for Rangers so far this season, and he is now serving a three-week suspension.

As announced on the Scottish Premiership club’s official website on Monday, the Englishman has been suspended for three weeks.

Barton told talkSPORT last week about a training ground bust-up between him and Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday.

Many will doubt that the former Queens Park Rangers midfielder will play again for Rangers, and Kenny Burns has suggested in The Nottingham Post that Forest should make a move for him if he becomes a free agent.

The former Forest and Leeds man has stated that Barton would bring leadership to the Forest dressing room.
