Nottingham Forest’s assistant manager David Weir has stated he wants to do all he can to help get the Reds back into the Premier League after an 18 year absence, as reports the club’s official website.

The 47-year-old arrived at The City Ground alongside manager Mark Warburton in March, with the pair working together in football since 2013 when Warburton made Weir his assistant at Brentford, and the duo did their bit as Forest – deep in relegation trouble – survived on the final day of the season.

Moving forwards, the plan is – as it has been since the club were relegated in 1999 – to get Forest back in the Premier League, and with a hectic summer ahead of them, fans are optimistic that next season Warburton can build solid foundations for a push in the near future.

Weir sees survival as a more of a relief than anything to wildly celebrate about, and has stated that work has already begun in regards to how the duo plan to take the club forwards, with plenty to do around The City Ground.

“The end has come round quickly and we got a positive outcome in regards to staying in the league, which is relative success and that’s obviously pleasing, but there’s loads that you want to get involved in and loads that you want to try and help,” Weir said to Forest’s official website.

“Obviously the priority has been staying in the league, but now getting that security I think, we can look forward to building something and hopefully getting the club back to somewhere near where it needs to be.”

Following their 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town, Forest finished the season in 21st position on 51 points, staying up on goal difference with 22nd placed Blackburn Rovers being relegated with the same points tally.

The club is expecting to be taken over by Greek shipping magnate and Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis in the near future, which would end the disastrous reign of current owner Fawaz Al Hasawi.
