Garth Crooks has written on BBC Sport that Jonjo Shelvey could save Newcastle United millions in the January transfer window.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward made the comments about Shelvey after watching him in action for Newcastle against Arsenal in the Premier League at the weekend.

Newcastle lost 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Crooks wrote on BBC Sport: “As for Newcastle, it’s clear Eddie Howe has got an awful lot to do.

“However, I couldn’t help but notice the new manager has invested some faith in Jonjo Shelvey, who had a decent game.

“If Howe can get Shelvey fit and focused for any length of time, Newcastle might save themselves quite a bit of money in the transfer market come January.”

Jonjo Shelvey could be big for Newcastle

Arsenal were the better team at the Emirates Stadium and deservedly picked up all three points from the encounter.

Now, we saw that Newcastle were poor defensively, but Shelvey did try his best in attack.

The former Liverpool midfielder came close to scoring in the first half and forced Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into making a brilliant save.

We know how good Shelvey can be.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has publicly spoken highly of the 29-year-old.

In our opinion, Shelvey could be a big player for Newcastle this season.

The 29-year-old has been on the books of the Magpies since 2016.

So, Shelvey would know all about relegation battles.

Newcastle need their players to be at their best if they are to escape the dreaded drop from the Premier League.
