Gary Lineker has told Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane on Twitter that he has ‘nothing’ to be ashamed of after his penalty miss for England during their defeat to France at the Qatar World Cup.
On one hand, Kane equalled Wayne Rooney’s all-time goalscoring record (52) when he netted his first penalty early in the second half.
Then the moment came for him to create history and become his nation’s greatest goalscorer of them all.
But, most importantly, level the scores against the world champions and possibly start England’s road to the semi-final.
Then the moment Kane, his teammates, and the rest of his nation dreaded, his spot-kick sailing over Hugo Lloris’ bar and landing in north London. It was a disastrous and gut-wrenching moment for the player.
The £200k-a-week Spurs star (Spotrac) apologised to fans for that moment, but Lineker made it clear that he should hold his head up high.
KANE HAS LITTLE TIME TO RECOVER
Usually, it’s the summer and players would jet-off on their holidays so they can try and recover from what just happened.
But not now because the Premier League season resumes on Boxing Day and Kane has a fight on his hands to help Antonio Conte’s side secure Champions League football.
Spurs will surely get a penalty from now until the end of the season – in any competition – and when Kane steps up for that moment, then those flashbacks of Doha will be pictured in his head.
In truth, even if he puts that next spot-kick away, the only thing that will help him properly recover from this moment is England pushing over that line of winning a major tournament, which has hit another roadblock.
