Ashley Young has fired back on Twitter following Gary Neville’s recent comments on Liverpool’s top-four chances against Manchester United and Newcastle United, prior to the Merseyside club recording a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa on Saturday.

On Monday night, the Manchester United legend told Sky Sports that ‘Liverpool will get 71 points’ and his former club and Newcastle United ‘have to win two matches’, in order to secure Champions League football.

Well, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have seemingly spoilt that party because they recorded a point at Anfield yesterday to stop Jurgen Klopp’s men from hitting that 71 mark.

If it wasn’t for Roberto Firmino’s 89-minute equaliser, then Champions League football would already be sealed for Erik ten Hag and Eddie Howe’s men.

Nonetheless, all the duo need now is one point from their remaining two matches and they will be playing Champions League football next season.

But given that Neville was seemingly brushing aside Aston Villa like they would get walked all over by Liverpool was a mistake by those in the media.

It’s understandable to think that of Southampton – Liverpool’s last game of the season – because they are already relegated, but those in the Midlands are still fighting for Europe themselves.

Nonetheless, this was Ashley Young’s response to it all on Sunday morning, as he played a part in denting Liverpool’s now-slim Champions League hopes yesterday.

PUT RESPECT ON EMERY AND VILLA’S NAME

For far too many weeks, certain parts of the media have dismissed Villa and their Manager of the Season contender, Unai Emery.

The Villa fans were told by some that the high line they played during their win against Tottenham would get them ‘destroyed’ at Anfield. Well, they walked away with a point, and in truth, it should have been all three if it wasn’t for Ollie Watkins’ missed penalty.

Then the likes of Mr Neville and Co. were sure that Villa would just step aside for Liverpool to secure all three points and further boost their top four chances.

Well, they have probably now done both Uniteds a favour.

Emery walked into a mess at Villa Park, surprise, surprise, left by a certain Liverpool legend. The job he has done during that period has been outstanding and he deserves more respect.
