
Tottenham Hotspur fans have reacted on Twitter to Jan Vertonghen helping Benfica thrash Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League.
Whilst Spurs prepare for their Europa League Conference side later on tonight, one of their former players was enjoying one of the best nights of his career.
Last summer, Vertonghen was allowed to leave the club on a free, with Jose Mourinho at the helm.
And whilst the North London club have continued to decline since then, he has shone out in Portugal.
Vertonghen’s name is just added to the name of other ex-Spurs players, who after leaving the club, are seemingly bettering themselves.
From Kyle Walker to Christian Eriksen, there just seems to be something in the waters at Hotspur Way.
Nonetheless, Spurs were pleased for Vertonghen and performance he put in against a pretty abject Barca side.
The Spanish giants are in a complete and utter mess, both on and off the field.
From financial woes to losing their opening two Champions League games, Barcelona haven’t been in this situation for decades.
Losing Lionel Messi doesn’t help anyone’s cause, but it just cause to show the cracks the little magician was papering over during these past few years.
But, at the end of the day, Barcelona are still Barcelona and Benfica deserved their three points.
They are sitting second in Group E, and whilst it’s early doors yet, they have set a great platform for themselves to progress through to the knockout stages.
