Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool trio Fabinho, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold will ‘get better’ as a partnership at the back, as he told the Liverpool Echo.

Ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Midtjylland, Klopp admitted that it’s ‘difficult’ building a new backline without their star man at the back.

Since Van Dijk’s injury, Klopp has opted for a back four of TAA – Gomez – Fanbinho – Robertson.

They haven’t conceded from open play yet and they secured a clean sheet and win during their opening Champions League group game at Ajax last week.

Klopp shared that his new formed backline, with the number six Fabinho dropping back, aren’t ‘used to each other’ yet but he was seemingly confident that they will work down the line.

“Every team would miss him [Van Dijk], he’s best in the world,” said Klopp.

“You have to build a new lineup, difficult to do. Matip injured too. Fab as 6 plays at CB. Trent & Robbo, they are all not used to each other but they will get better.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

During these next few weeks, as the tests get tougher for Liverpool’s backline, it will be interesting to see how the likes of Fabinho, Gomez, Joel Matip and the fullbacks perform.

It seems as though Klopp is going to use Fabinho as that footballing brain and leader at the heart of Liverpool’s defence during Van Dijk’s absence.

But is he going to be the long-term answer? Or will Klopp dip into the January market for another centre-back? Because the last time they purchased a centre-back in January, he didn’t turn out to be too shabby.
