Tim Sherwood and Michael Carrick slammed the performances of Mason Holgate and Michael Keane during Everton’s 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Monday night, as they told Premier League Productions (07/03/22 at 8:55 pm).

The former Spurs boss claimed that Keane is ‘not good enough’ and nor is he ‘up for it’ going by yesterday’s display.

Everton went into the game hoping to pounce on a Spurs side that beat Manchester City one week, but then get knocked out of the FA Cup by a Championship the next.

But before they could get into the half-time break in north London, Frank Lampard’s side were 3-0 down, which included Keane getting ripped apart by Harry Kane.

Both Sherwood and Carrick were critical of Everton’s defensive display, including from their two men at the back.

“It’s an absolute massacre, isn’t it?! said Sherwood. “We said that Everton’s only chance was if they sit back.

“We highlighted the weakness, Holgate and Keane. They aren’t good enough, so you need to give them protection and it’s exactly what they don’t do. It’s hard for Allan to protect on his own.

“This is just horrendous defending from Keane. His body shape is all wrong – he’s not good enough and he’s not up to it.”

Carrick added: “We spoke before the game about the centre-halves getting pulled out. Holgate gets pulled out, then Keane is one-v-one in the box. Really, you want Holgate to be at the front post. It’s rash. You have to be lighter on your feet.”

At the rate Everton are going, relegation to England’s second-tier is staring them right in the face.

What’s even worse for the club is that fans probably saw this coming because they have been run like a mess, from top to bottom, for a long while now.

From spending hundreds of millions only to make themselves worse to then deciding to appoint a Liverpool legend as their manager.

Lampard has his work cut out and if their next two home games – Newcastle and Wolves – both end in defeat, then they will drop into the relegation zone and they will then be in serious, serious trouble.
