Speculation about Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay joining Newcastle United never really got off the ground.

On June 28, The Times reported, as covered by HITC Sport, that the St James’s Park outfit were interested in bringing the Scotland international to Tyneside this summer.

That’s an interesting rumour but one that didn’t really persist by virtue of the fact that there wasn’t much follow-up speculation about Newcastle being in for the Red Devil.

And based on his latest performance, the Magpies will do well to steer clear of him.

Manchester United kicked off their Premier League campaign with a surprise 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford in what was Erik ten Hag’s first competitive game in charge.

The MEN offered a scathing assessment of McTominay’s role in the defeat, giving him a 3/10 for his performance.

And Roy Keane has echoed those sentiments, claiming that the Scot – and midfield partner Fred – simply aren’t good enough.

He said live on Sky Sports: “Fred and McTominay – not good enough. They won’t get Man United back competing at the top. We see it week in, week out. Not up to it.”

Scott McTominay joining Newcastle?

This was a horrendous way in which to begin a new Premier League campaign and you wonder if the Dutch manager might be offer the likes of McTominay to other clubs.

If Newcastle are given a call, Eddie Howe should reject the opportunity.

The Magpies haven’t signed a midfielder since the McTominay speculation but if you can’t impose yourself on a game at home to Brighton then for what those in the North-East want to achieve, they need to look for better than the Scot.
