CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has not ruled out Newcastle United making a late move to sign Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, who could leave the Foxes in the final week of the transfer window.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the reporter stated that it’s not unreasonable to suggest that Newcastle could launch an eleventh-hour bid to sign Maddison, with the Toon linked with the Premier League superstar for the past month, with Leicester valuing their no. 10 at £60m.

Newcastle have been oddly quiet this month in the transfer window following the arrivals of Nick Pope and Sven Botman, with the Magpies still looking for an attacker to provide cover for Callum Wilson as well as a midfielder to add more depth in the squad, something Maddison could provide.

One of the Premier League’s most productive players in his position, Maddison could be tempted to sign for Newcastle should Eddie Howe’s side make a late bid for the 25-year-old attacking midfielder, especially with Leicester starting the new Premier League season in disastrous fashion.

Brenden Rodgers’ side currently sit 19th in the standings with just one point, and with Leicester yet to make a signing this summer, it makes sense why Maddison could quit the King Power Stadium side in the coming days for a move to Newcastle.

Indeed, a bid first has to come in from Newcastle if they’re to recruit Maddison, and according to Jacobs, it’s not unrealistic to suggest that this could happen if the Magpies fail to sign another player between now and next Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The journalist said on Maddison: “When you get to last chance saloon of the window, especially if clubs don’t fill a particular position, sometimes they try their luck. It’s not unthinkable that, on deadline day, Newcastle, if they don’t get another target, might return.”

Maddison has been one of the best playmakers in England ever since signing for Leicester from Norwich City, and for Newcastle, signing the midfielder late on in the window will be an exciting step in the right direction for fans of the northeast Premier League side.

After all, Maddison has the quality to elevate Newcastle to the next level in the English top-flight, and if Howe can bring in another attacker to compliment Wilson, the Toon will have concluded some of the best business in the Premier League this summer.
