Sol Bamba has warned Arsenal against signing John Stones by claiming that they require a ‘proper defender’ rather than a ‘ball-playing’ centre-halve, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports News (15/07/20 at 19:05 pm).

The Cardiff City powerhouse stated that he’s ‘not too sure’ that Stones signing for Arsenal is a good idea even though Mikel Arteta recently worked with him at the Etihad Stadium.

90 Min recently reported that Arsenal have an interest in the England international and Manchester City are willing to sell their player.

Bamba is known for his old school defending as he shared his thoughts on Arsenal signing Stones, who is a two-time Premier League winner.

“I’m not too sure,” Bamba told Soccer Special. “He is very, very good on the ball. But I think Arsenal need a proper defender.

“Like the old school defenders. The Sol Campbell’s and the Tony Adam’s. I know we keep going back and talking about them.

“But I do think those ball-playing centre-halves now. They are just very good on the ball and very good on the eye. But they need to be defenders, first and foremost. I think Arsenal need to get a proper defender and not worrying about him passing the ball from the back.”

Stones is the last type of player Arsenal need because they have enough error-prone defenders on their book as it is.

His strengths are on the ball and moving it forward rather than defending his own goal – something Arteta doesn’t need.

Since the restart, it has been quite clear that Arsenal need new defenders because their current crop have made a number of costly mistakes.
