‘Not too many people like us’: Liverpool player reacts to Raheem Sterling’s claims

Jordan Henderson has reacted to Raheem Sterling’s claims that the Liverpool player is ‘the nicest guy’ away from the pitch, but on the field of play, he is ‘one of the meanest guys’, as he told Lions’ Den.

The Liverpool captain openly admitted that he can ‘imagine not many people like us on the pitch’, but he made it clear that he’s ‘very different’ off it.

When Sterling was coming through Liverpool’s ranks as a youngster, he would have seen a fresh-faced, Henderson, also trying to make a name for himself at Anfield.

And whilst the duo achieved their success away from one another, they have been two of the best English performers of recent years, with Premier League and Champions League medals to their name.

Nonetheless, Henderson was told about Sterling’s claim that he is ‘the nicest guy off the field but one of the meanest guys on it’ and this is how he responded.

“To be honest, I can imagine not too many people like us on the pitch,” said Henderson. “Or players that have played against us. They probably think I am a totally different person.

“So, I am not sure whether or not I am one of the nicest off it, definitely not. But I suppose, I am very different off the pitch to what I am like on the pitch.

“So, if you know us as a person then I would be very different to what people would imagine.”

Well, some of that fight, aggression and leadership quality that Henderson shows on the field of play will be needed at Euro 2020.

Given that the Liverpool man hasn’t played much of late, it does make his life more difficult in trying to get those much-needed minutes under his belt.

But with the performances the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice are putting in, it does make a seemingly rusty Henderson’s job that bit harder to get back into the side.

Unless England wrap things up and progress to the knockout stages by beating Scotland on Friday, then there might be a lot of rotation when the Czech Republic visit next week, including providing Henderson with a start.
