Stevie Nicol has told Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur to opt against signing Chelsea striker, Romelu Lukaku.

The search for Harry Kane’s replacement is underway at Tottenham, after the club’s all-time leading top-scorer secured a transfer to Bayern Munich this summer.

Who will come in for the England captain? Nicol says ‘Richarlison isn’t the answer’, but nor is Romelu Lukaku, as he told ESPN.

On Sunday, Spurs fans got a first real glance at the type of football they will play under their new manager.

They had nearly 70% possession against a top-quality Brentford side, with Spurs playing with speed, attacking intent and aggression.

Bearing that in mind, Liverpool legend Nicol thinks that Lukaku doesn’t suit what Postecoglou is building because he suits a counter-attacking team.

“Yeah, (it would surprise me if Spurs signed Lukaku),” said Nicol. “Lukaku does well when teams are counter-attacking. He has been at his best in counter-attacking sides.

“If there is one thing Spurs aren’t going to be, then that’s counter-attacking, so how does he fit in? He doesn’t. He’s not going to hold it up like Harry Kane did. He’s not going to bring everybody in like Harry did. I mean, he’s just not.

“Richarlison isn’t the answer, but Lukaku is not the answer, absolutely.”

Lukaku is at a crossroads

Last season, the 108-cap Belgium international, who had a World Cup to forget in Qatar, had an up-and-down time at Inter, who reached and lost the Champions League final.

Since then, he has returned to Chelsea, but he isn’t part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans, amid claims that he wants him sold as soon as possible.

Recently, the career of Lukaku was described as a ‘big mess’, as he is at a crossroads in his career and the next move he makes has to be right.
