Danny Murphy has questioned on TalkSport (12/10/20 at 11:25 am) why West Ham are pushing for Said Benrahma’s signature when they are already top-heavy in the attacking department.
The former Liverpool midfielder also made it clear that the recent capture of Craig Dawson from Watford on a season-long loan is ‘not the answer’ to their problems.
The Guardian recently reported that the Hammers remain interested in signing Benrahma despite complications between the winger and his own club.
Murphy was first told about those Benrahma rumours, and his comments about Dawson came before he officially signed.
“He’s a super talent,” Murphy told TalkSport. “I am sure he would add quality to any squad. With Bowen, Yarmolenko, Fornals, Lanzini, Antonio and Haller.
“To be using what £18 million, or best part of £20 million, on a player who you wouldn’t say is a priority. It could go higher. Up to 30?!
“Look, West Ham are going well at the minute so the fans will appreciate any signings. It will take a little bit off the owner. That will subside for a few weeks until they lose a couple.
“That’s not the answer [on West Ham signing Dawson].”
Only days remain for the Hammers to do some business with the domestic transfer window slamming shut on Friday.
It could be argued that the big-money should have been spent on a defender rather than an attacker because the club already have depth in that area.
But those in the boardroom are making these decisions, and in a couple of months time, if West Ham are deep in a relegation battle then the pressure will be put back on the owners.
