Kevin Campbell has claimed that Arsenal will need a better and more polished striker than Eddie Nketiah going forward.
Nketiah signed a new contract at the Gunners this past summer and with it, earning a £100,000-a-week salary [The Sun].
However, he remains something of a bit-part player at Arsenal and is stuck behind Gabriel Jesus in the pecking order.
The 22-year-old has impressed in cameo Premier League appearances and also scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory away to Zurich in the Europa League last week.
But Campbell has told the Highbury Squad channel on YouTube that despite his improvement, Nketiah is simply ‘not the answer’ for Mikel Arteta in the long term.
He said: “Eddie’s a good finisher but yet to prove it year in year out at the top level. I’ve said it myself previously, Eddie’s not the answer. I’d love him to prove me wrong. I think he’s improved his all-round game, but finishing wise, I don’t know if he’s the answer.”
Arsenal really should’ve signed another number nine; not to replace Nketiah, but to compete with him and Jesus up front.
Remember, Arteta lost three strikers in 2022.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had his contract terminated in January, Alexandre Lacazette was released and Folarin Balogun was loaned to Reims in Ligue 1 during the summer.
At the moment, Arsenal are one injury to Jesus away from being in serious trouble because with Arteta’s side being in European again this season, they cannot rely on Nketiah in both competitions.
