Dundee United manager Micky Mellon is ‘not surprised’ to see highly-rated defender Kerr Smith attract the interest of clubs like Aston Villa and Liverpool, as he told The Courier.
Speculation surrounding the future of the Tangerines youngster is nothing new.
The Courier reported as far back as October 2020 that Smith was travelling to Birmingham for talks with Aston Villa. At the time, he had also attracted glances from both Everton and Manchester United.
But with the summer transfer window now just weeks away, transfer talk has gone into overdrive.
The Sun (9 May, page 59) reports that long-time admirers Aston Villa are now expected to win the race for Smith’s signature with a £500,000 deal on the cards, though the likes of Leicester, Liverpool and Southampton cannot be ruled out at this stage.
“I’m not surprised there would be interest,” explained Mellon when asked about Smith’s future. “He’s a talented boy. We enjoy having him here and watching him progress.

“If there’s no interest, you’re kind of wondering why not?”
Mellon insists that, as of right now, he knows nothing about reports suggesting Smith is set for an imminent move south of the border.
That could soon change, however, with Aston Villa stepping up their interest in a player they have been watching for the best part of eight months now.
