Michael Owen thinks Tottenham Hotspur-linked Naby Keita ‘isn’t good enough’ for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and he feels his time is up at Anfield.
On Saturday, the 28-year-old started Liverpool’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace, but after another abject 45 minutes, where he also picked up a yellow card, he was hooked at half-time and replaced by youngster Harvey Elliott.
Ever since Keita secured a £48 million transfer to Anfield (BBC Sport), he just hasn’t been able to find that magic in his game and has faced many struggles.
Aside from the form, injuries have also been a problem for the midfielder, with suggestions that Antonio Conte’s Tottenham would be willing to take him on board next season.
Keita’s contract on Merseyside runs out at the end of the season and, as things stand, there aren’t any clear signs that he will extend his stay.
And, in truth, given Liverpool’s issues this season, especially in the middle of the park, not many would be crying for him to stay, with Owen sharing his thoughts, as he told Premier League Productions (25/02/23 at 7:40 pm).
“It’s an experienced midfield, of course, but that’s what Liverpool have got nowadays,” said Owen. “People are crying out for Liverpool to go and invest in a young midfield.
“I am sure they will do that in the summer. But, for now, they have to rely (on what they have). Not sure Naby Keita will be there for too long – he isn’t good enough.”
KEITA ISN’T CHAMPIONS LEAGUE STANDARD
A change in scenery is what Keita needs in the summer and perhaps a move away from the Premier League.
Tottenham are battling for a Champions League spot and will be doing so next season. Whilst they need players, someone like Keita simply isn’t the answer.
Especially given that Rodrigo Bentancur is set to be on the sidelines for most of the year. A player with a much higher ceiling is needed.
