Tony Cascarino has told talkSPORT that he’s ‘not sure’ about Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The former striker thinks the 20-year-old ‘overplays’ and feels he isn’t capable of playing the Marcelo Bielsa way.

Over the weekend, Meslier’s wayward pass resulted in Leeds losing the ball and then moments later conceding a penalty.

Cascarino shared his thoughts on the Leeds shot-stopper, who has replaced the more experienced Kiko Casilla in between the sticks.

“I am not sure about the Leeds keeper,” said Cascarino. “He overplays for me. I think sometimes ‘wow, you really want to take a risk with that pass?’

“But the manager wants them to play. I’m not sure he is capable of actually playing the way Bielsa wants him to do.

“He does a lot of passing, so he’s nearly like a centre-half in the final backline.”

Meslier is still a young player and he has a long way to go in his career, so it’s understandable that his performances are a little indifferent.

Plus, the Frenchman isn’t playing behind a robust and deep-sitting Leeds team, they are free-flowing and pretty open.

All of that makes life tougher for Meslier because it means he will have to do more work and under more pressure.
