Peter Schmeichel has slammed the criticism of Trent Alexander-Arnold and how he ‘isn’t being supported well enough’ by his Liverpool teammates.

The legendary goalkeeper shared how, in pre-season, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defending was once again put under the microscope, as he highlighted Liverpool’s defeat to Bayern Munich.

Now, pre-season is pre-season, but Schmeichel thinks, rather than looking at Alexander-Arnold as the issue when conceding goals from his side, he pointed the finger at Joel Matip, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

The previous campaign saw the Reds drop off big time in the Premier League and from a defensive standpoint, with many of their star defenders coming under fire.

Alexander-Arnold, whilst he is a genius with the ball, was one of them and how he seemingly dropped a level when without the ball – it even called for Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s plea that another right-back needs to be signed this summer.

Now, that hasn’t happened because, forget about defensive options, FSG aren’t even getting enough midfield players through their doors, as Schmeichel shared his thoughts on Trent at right-back.

“I was in Singapore when Liverpool played Bayern Munich,” said Schmeichel. “I went to watch them play Bayern Munich and I was looking at Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“I am a really big fan. I think he is a fantastic player. This game ended 4-3, conceding four goals and three of those goals came from that pass inside him. I am looking at and thinking that the criticism of him is a little bit unfair, in terms of what is being asked of the manager for when Liverpool have the ball.

“I am looking at your two centre-halves and Matip played on that side in the first half. I came to the conclusion that, the problem is more over there at the centre-half and not supporting him well enough. Everyone knows that pass is on now.”

Have Liverpool improved?

Given that Jurgen Klopp’s side were the last team to stop this relentless and now-Treble-winning Manchester City team from winning the Premier League title, then fans are backing them to get back on track this season and challenge again.

But does Klopp have the tools to do that? It could be argued no. Are there enough midfield players? Whilst Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are outstanding signings, they joined when Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were still here, so where are their replacements?

The Merseyside club have been pushing and pushing for Romeo Lavia, well, they received some bad news overnight regarding the Southampton teenager.
