Liverpool have dropped off considerably in recent weeks and slipped to fourth in the Premier League
Danny Murphy believes Liverpool are “not right” defensively and need to strengthen the squad before the end of the transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp’s side won the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2020, but have done little to suggest that they can hit similar heights this season.
A succession of injuries, most notably the long-term absence of Virgil van Dijk, has hindered Klopp and the champions are now fourth in the table.
Sunday’s 3-2 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford saw them exit the FA Cup, and former Anfield midfielder Danny Murphy looked on with concern.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy said: “I think it’s disappointing. Obviously as a Liverpool supporter you want them to be maintaining the levels they’ve set so brilliantly for the last couple of years, but inevitably there was going to be a dip at some point.
“I suppose the small area of concern is the lack of transfer activity when they’re so desperately in need.
“Now I don’t think you should ever go out and buy for the sake of it, and if you can’t get the ones you want in then you don’t do it, but defensively they’re not right are they, that’s for sure.
“I know they’re not scoring, but you could see (against Manchester United) defensively they’re not right when (Joel) Matip isn’t there, so I hope for everybody’s sake they do something in the last few days of the window.”
Liverpool return to league action on Thursday night when they face Tottenham in London.
Jose Mourinho’s side currently sit one point behind Liverpool with a game in hand.
