Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has been discussing Joe Willock and his form for Newcastle.

The Magpies legend has been discussing some of the Premier League’s brightest young players as a part of the Rising Stars series, and he ended up discussing Willock.

Willock caught the eye last season on loan at Newcastle, but sadly, he hasn’t quite hit those heights this term.

Shearer himself admits that Willock has gone backwards, but he’s been full of praise for Willock’s desire to make things happen whenever he gets the ball.

What’s been said?

Shearer spoke about Willock.

“Newcastle’s Joe Willock is next on our list who joined the Magpies permanently after an excellent loan spell from Arsenal. He’s not quite found last season’s form, but he’s beginning to settle back in. Behind Allan Saint-Maximin he is the most active dribbler at Newcastle, which tells me the lad has real desire to make things happen.

“After eight goals last term, expectations have been high in that department, but he just hasn’t been clinical enough. As Newcastle’s outlook has improved though, so has Willock’s.”

Needs to improve

Simply put, Willock needs to rediscover his best form or else his Newcastle career could be on borrowed time.

Now, we’re not saying that Willock is a bad player, but when you’re playing for the richest club in the world, you’re going to have world-class players breathing down your neck sooner rather than later.

Bruno Guimaraes has already arrived to take up one midfield spot, and United are also being linked with a move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Joelinton reinventing himself as a midfielder hasn’t helped Willock either, and unless he bucks up his ideas, he could be out of the door at St James’ Park before too long.
