The Uruguayan is set to turn his loan deal at Sporting into a permanent one.
It is a well-known fact that Sunderland are not exactly bankrolling David Moyes with a warchest for the January transfer window.
The Black Cats are struggling against relegation from the Premier League yet again but finances are tight and the club will need to sell before they buy this winter.
So, they have been dealt a big boost from one completely forgotten player.
Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud in action with Sunderland’s Sebastian Coates
It looks as though Sebastian Coates is all set to complete a €5 million (£4.25 million) permanent move to Sporting Lisbon this month.
Sporting’s president Bruno de Carvalho has confirmed it is just a matter of time before he joins the club from Sunderland for the agreed fee – with Sunderland surely hoping to cash in as soon as possible.
He is quoted by Record as stating:
“There’s a buying clause of €5 million.
“It’s a matter of time until Coates becomes a Sporting player for good. There are no doubts.”
Sporting Lisbon’s Sebastian Coates
Coates is certainly something of a forgotten name at the Stadium of Light.
The 26-year-old joined the club from Liverpool, initially on loan, at the start of the 2014-15 season but after joining permanently he soon dropped out the first-team and was sold by Sam Allardyce. He has not played a game for Sunderland since January 2016 and now the club could be about to profit from him 12 months down the line.
