MK Dons boss Russell Martin has played down reports linking the League One outfit with Sunderland striker Will Grigg, as reported by the MK Citizen.
In the two years since an ill-fated £4 million deal that looked doomed from day one, Sunderland have had almost as many managers as Grigg has scored league goals for the Black Cats.
In 47 games, the Northern Ireland international has found the net just five times and, if rumours are to be believed, his torturous spell on Wearside could finally be coming to an end before the month is out.
New Sunderland coach Lee Johnson admitted after Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Ipswich Town that Grigg could be allowed to leave (Echo). The 29-year-old hasn’t featured in any of the club’s last six games.
But while goal-shy Shrewsbury Town are interested, according to the Shropshire Star, the same can’t be said about third-tier rivals MK Dons.
“I think we’ve been signing for the last three windows,” Martin said sarcastically.
“We are involved with a lot of players, (centre-forward) is an area we want to strengthen. But (Grigg) is someone else’s player so I don’t want to talk about him individually.
“At this minute, it’s not one I can see happening, no.”
Johnson, meanwhile, has suggested he would be interested in bringing a striker to Sunderland in the final few days of the transfer window.
The Sun (24 January, page 59) suggested Grigg and fellow striker Danny Graham could both make way to raise funds for signings.
