Paul Merson has made it clear that he doesn’t agree with Aston Villa manager Dean Smith ‘one bit’ after he claimed that it’s a ‘good time’ to play Liverpool.

The Premier League champions will host the relegation strugglers on Sunday afternoon and Merson told Soccer Saturday (04/07/20 at 2:05 pm) that this is a ‘nightmare’ game for Villa.

Smith thinks that it’s a ‘good time’ to play Liverpool [Daily Mail] because of the defeat they recently suffered at the hands of Manchester City and the fact that there will be no Anfield crowd.

But it is fair to say that former Villa man, Merson, was baffled by Smith’s comments and was asked whether he agreed with them or not.

“Not one bit,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “Not even a little bit. I cannot even think of a worse time [to play Liverpool].

“They have just been absolutely ripped to shreds [by Manchester City] and they will come out and be flying.

“I don’t get that one. I can understand the fans one. But these players will be hurting. They have won the league, but no-one will be wanting to get beat by four. For me, I don’t think it’s a good time to be playing Liverpool. If they make as many chances and the movement then I don’t know how Villa are going to live with them. I think this is a nightmare game.”

This is a tough, tough ask for Villa and they will need every luck in the world if they are to leave Anfield with any points.

Results have gone in favour of Villa over the weekend with Watford losing 3-0 at Chelsea and Bournemouth conceding five against Manchester United.
